WHAT ARE TERPENES?
"If you asked a botanist, “what are terpenes?” They would most likely tell you they are in the essential oils of plants. Furthermore, they are aromatic organic hydrocarbons. You can find them in a variety of plants and even some insects." - High Times Magazine
In layman's terms, Terpenes are fundamentally responsible for the therapeutic behavior of essential oils. For example, Lavender essential oil contains over 100 different compounds yet the component responsible for its reputation of being calming & soothing is a terpene known as Linalool. When you extract pure Linalool, you are getting somewhat of a “super” essential oil. That is not a technical term but you get the point.
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CANNABIS AND TERPENES?
Cannabis is a pharmacologically complex plant with equally intriguing aromas. Terpenes are what you smell when you break open a fresh nugg and are also responsible for how a strain will taste. Even more exciting is that Terpenes are believed to play a role in how THC and other cannabinoids effect our bodies.
Some people claim that much like essential oils, cannabis terpenes are capable of everything from calming to energizing to reducing inflammation to improving mental focus. It’s hard to come by human studies on the specific effects of marijuana terpenes because there are insane roadblocks when trying to run clinical trials, but some research on non-cannabis terpenes suggests that certain strains do have anti-inflammatory and neuro-protective effects. At this point, it's important to note that Cannabis in general lacks solid research due to its classification by the federal government but absence of evidence doesn’t mean evidence of absence.
